The Origin of Black Friday

As the most anticipated day of the year for all shopaholics around the world, Black Friday is the perfect time to grab that special item we've been eyeing for a while, the perfect opportunity to buy the first Christmas presents for friends, family, and why not, even for ourselves. But how did Black Friday come about? It's 1924, we're in New York City, and the United States is in the midst of the Roaring Twenties. Women and girls around the world have finally become emancipated, they have renounced the tight and rigid Victorian-style dresses, they express themselves with smoky eye makeup, bright red lips, short hair, and dresses that are definitely shorter. In this vibrant atmosphere of innovation and change, the entire city is buzzing: Christmas is just around the corner, the streets are crowded and noisy. But between Broadway and 34th Street, there seems to be more movement than anywhere else. Macy's department store, the largest department store in the world, has arrived at Herald Square. To celebrate its opening, the owners organize an exceptional shopping day, accompanied by a spectacular costume parade, which will become a true tradition for the city of NYC over the years. No one wants to miss the legendary event and a huge crowd gathers in front of the store. The doors open and the employees are overwhelmed by a wave of customers. They then begin to fill out the accounting registers, writing and writing, purchases and orders continue to increase, and the receipts are through the roof. Everything is recorded strictly with the black pen, because red is reserved for losses. And so, on the last Friday of November, the day before Thanksgiving, the ink flows in rivers: all black. Hence the origin of the name, Black Friday.
