K. Jacques, a brand run by three generations of the same family, is a shoemaker synonymous with the splendour and glamour of the French Riviera. Loved by fashion icons such as Karl Lagerfeld and Helmut Lang, K. Jacques has epitomised French fashion excellence since 1933, when two Armenian refugees, husband and wife Jacques and Elise Keklikian, opened their first footwear atelier in Rue Allard 33 in Saint Tropez. The two spouses worked in synergy, with Jacques providing the craftsmanship and Elise the creativity. The couple's first customers were family friends and neighbours. When the atelier began to attract leading exponents of the pop culture of the time, such as Brigitte Bardot, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso and the writer Colette – all members of the jet-set that populated the streets of Saint Tropez every summer – Jacques decided to name the brand using the initial of his surname, thus creating K. Jacques.
Currently at the head of the brand are the children of the two founders, who have joined forces with the new generation of grandchildren to consolidate the brand's reputation for quality, durability and refinement. An evolution that goes hand in hand with that of Saint Tropez itself, which over the years has become one of the capitals of the Mediterranean’s night life. To this day, the brand’s footwear production is entirely artisanal: every pair of sandals takes an hour to make, requiring the assembly of 123 different pieces in 46 different steps performed by 28 artisans, who work over 250 different types of leather, including exotic leather and double-layer leather for the soles. Each sandal model bears the name of a historical character, such as Ghandi, Homer or Epicurus. Over time, high-heeled and platform shoes have been added to the traditional line of sandals.
Today, what started as a craft shop has become a small empire that exports 70% of its sandals worldwide to 250 retail stores. Over the years, the brand has also started successful partnerships with numerous fashion brands such as Karl Lagerfeld, Kenzo, Courregés, Balenciaga, Helmut Lang, Givenchy, Isabel Marant and Missoni, whose designers combine their vision and creativity with the artisanal values and extraordinary savoir-faire of K. Jacques, thus celebrating its heritage and craftsmanship.
