The 1839 daguerreotype camera is a landmark in photography. It introduced the first practical method for taking a photograph, although what is generally recognized as the very first photograph was actually taken thirteen years earlier with a different type of camera by Nicéphore Niépce. The Leica was the first camera to popularize the 35mm format, but it was certainly not the first to use 35 mm film.
